NS485 Care of Children and Adolescents with Diabetes

Who should apply?

Registered nurses working in the field of diabetes in childhood and/or children’s nursing, both in the hospital and community setting. 

Module Aim

This module is designed to increase the theoretical knowledge base of nurses who care for children and adolescents with all forms of diabetes mellitus and their families.  It provides an opportunity for registered nurses working in the field of diabetes in childhood and/or children’s nursing to gain an insight and deeper understanding of diabetes in childhood and adolescents, underlying pathology, treatment modalities, nursing management and current research. 

Learning outcomes

On completion of this module and following a period of

personal study, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate  the ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate appropriate evidence-based care in the nursing management of children and adolescents with diabetes and their families in the healthcare and community setting
  • Critially examine the pathophysiological processes associated with diabetes in childhood and relate them to the delivery of nursing care
  • Explore the application of the pharmacological support and its delivery systems as utilized in the treatment of diabetes in childhood
  • Critically review the social, economic, psychological and emotional impact on the child and family of a chronic illness, and the importance of family-centred care in meeting the holistic needs of each child and their family
  • Evaluate the role of the registered nurse working in the field of diabetes in childhood and/or children’s nursing in meeting the health promotion and education needs of the child with diabetes in childhood and their family along the life continuum

The module will run in association with DCU in Semester 2, 2024.  It will be delivered via a blended learning approach in CHI at Temple Street on the following dates: February 12th/13th/26th/27th, March 4th/19th and April 9th 2024.
