What does it Mean to be Human in Today's World?

We invite you to take part in DCU’s Science Week Festival Multimedia Competition

Taking place from November 12-19 the theme for Science Week 2023 is ‘Human?’, which asks people to consider what does it mean to be human in today’s world, and how the decisions we make today will impact the people and world of the future. 

Category 1: Junior Art Competition (primary school, ages 5-12)

1. CREATE a piece of original visual art. The artwork must be 2D such as a painting or drawing. Entries must be A4 and landscape orientation. Acceptable media includes paint, pencil, marker, crayon, ink, felt, and oil pastel. 

2. SNAP or scan a full colour high quality compressed digital version of your artwork (jpeg preferred, optimal size 1123 x 794px)

3. UPLOAD your entry, along with a short artist statement (100 words max), using this online submission form.

Category 2: Youth Animation Competition (post-primary school, ages 12-18)

1. CREATE a short video animation.

2. POST your video to YouTube.

2. UPLOAD a link to your YouTube entry, along with a short youth animator statement (200 words max), using this online submission form.

Category 3: Multimedia Competition (ages 18+)

1. CREATE a short video, maximum three minutes in duration OR an A1 poster (portrait).

2. POST your video to YouTube OR DELIVER your poster to Room HG04, Faculty of Science and Health, DCU, Dublin 9.

3. UPLOAD a link to your You Tube entry or an image of your poster, along with a short statement (200 words max), using this online submission form.

Deadline for Submissions: The deadline for submissions is Sunday, November 19th, 2023. Judging will take place and final winners will be notified after November 24th, 2023.

All entries will be reviewed by an independent panel of jurors and selected works will be exhibited in our DCU Science Week Festival online gallery. Selected works may also feature on social media and digital display boards across the DCU campus.

Prizes: The overall winner in each category will receive a gift voucher to the value of €200. A €75 gift voucher will be awarded to the five runners-up in each category.

Rules and Guidelines

The work has to be relevant to the question: What does it mean to be human in today's world? entrants should consider the question of what lies ahead for future generations. From the climate emergency to social interaction and artificial intelligence, how will future generations be impacted?

• Your work must be original.
• Entries must be submitted via the online submission form.
• Videos and animations must not exceed three minutes in duration, should be shared by means of a YouTube link.
• All artwork must be submitted as a jpeg, recommended size 1123 x 794px.
• Only one entry permitted per person.
• Entrants in 'Category 3' must ensure that all video participants are over the age of 18 and have provided consent.
• All entrants must agree to the terms and conditions of the competition.
