Are you a Transition Year student with an interest in science or mathematics?
The DCU Faculty of Science and Health are hosting a number of placements for Transition Year students spanning the disciplines of Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences and Physical Sciences. There is no fee for attending these placements.
This is a wonderful opportunity to experience university life and to explore the diverse opportunities available to you.
Applications are now open and are taken on a first come first served basis.
If you are not currently in TY, we will not be able to accept your application.
How to apply
Select the placement for which you would like to apply from those listed below. Complete the online application form and submit it.
You must only apply for ONE placement.
Applicants should have a keen interest in science and/or mathematics and be available to attend for the duration of the placement.
Places are limited - if oversubscribed, applications will be reviewed and places allocated on the strength of the application.
NOTE: applications sent to the contact email addresses will not be accepted. All applications must be via the relevant School application form.
Transition year students at the DCU School of Physical Sciences will embark on a week-long immersive experience within the school, delving into the world of physics. During this week, they will engage in hands-on experimental activities, including constructing model telescopes, launching rockets, and conducting data analysis. This unique opportunity offers students a glimpse into the life of a physicist, providing them with access to workshops and laboratory sessions. Additionally, throughout the week, students will have the privilege of attending inspiring lectures that explore the realms of nanotechnology, astrophysics, and quantum physics.

In the School of Mathematical Sciences, students will participate in a variety of activities that will allow them to see how mathematics is applied in a range of different areas, such as astrophysics, financial risk and population modelling, and will look at some of the puzzles and paradoxes at the heart of mathematics. They will learn how to use relevant computer packages to prepare mathematical documents and will work in a team to make a presentation on a mathematical topic of their choice. Transition Year students can enjoy a week of work experience with the School of Chemical Sciences, which includes working in a chemistry laboratory and learning the importance of safety when working with chemicals. Participants learn to synthesize and analyse pharmaceuticals, get a chance to use instrumentation, do some forensic analysis and learn about the applications of chemistry research. They also get a short course in Microsoft PowerPoint and give a mini presentation on their experience.
