Professor Marann Byrne:

Professor Marann Byrne is Head of the Accounting Group at Dublin City University Business School (DCUBS). From 1993 to 1996 she was Associate Dean for Taught Programmes and from 2002 to 2004 she was Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies at DCUBS. She graduated from University College Dublin with first class honours and first place in both the B.Comm. and the Masters in Management Science. She completed her Ph.D at Dublin City University. She is a fellow of the Institute of Charted Accountants in Ireland and is an associate of the Irish Taxation Institute. She has established a strong national and international reputation in the area of accounting education research. Specifically, her research interests focus on students’ approaches to learning, understanding variation in academic performance, accounting within the Irish second level school curriculum, students’ perceptions of accounting and the history of accounting education in Ireland. She has published extensively in these areas and has presented papers at numerous international and national conferences. She has been awarded research grants from the Irish Research Council for Humanities and Social Sciences and the Irish Accountancy Educational Trust. In May 2006 she received the best paper award at the British Accounting Association Special Interest Group – Accounting Education Annual Conference. She is a former secretary and council member of the Irish Accounting and Finance Association and is a member of the review board for The International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. As part of her research work she is currently engaged in collaborate research projects with colleagues in Sheffield Hallam University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

Teaching Fellow Fund. The funding will be used to support the establishment of a Centre for Research on Student-Learning and Teaching (CReST). In particular, the monies will be used for the following activities of the fellow (and other centre members) • Buying out of some teaching • Student learning research seminars • Hiring of part-time research assistants • Travel and subsistence for attendance at conferences and visits to other centres of excellence in teaching and learning • Subscriptions to educational associations.
