DCU Alumni

Graduates edge past current students in DCU Basketball Alumni Match

Tuesday night, 25th February brought out the competitive side of some of our graduates and current students in the first DCU Basketball Alumni Match.

It was a battle of the Marks, with Mark Grennell, DCU Men's Basketball coach leading the student team, and Mark Ingle, coach of DCU Mercy looking after the Alumni team.

Among the Student’s team were captain and chairperson of DCU Men's Basketball, Gavin Doyle, who organised the event. Also within the group were winner of the MVP Award at the Freshers tournament, Mark Convery, and current Ireland U20’s Basketball player, Maeve O’Seaghdha. However, one notable player was former Galway minor footballer, Sean Fitzgerald, who swapped the pitch for the court, having never played basketball until the Alumni vs Student match!

Both teams were mixed and a selection of former Sport Scholarship recipients led the way for our Alumni team thanks to Áine McDonnaell, Aoibheann Byrne, Conor Gilligan and Andrew McGeever.

Also included were some everyday familiar faces to the DCU campus as Director of Sport and Wellbeing, James Galvin and Associate Director of DCU Educational Trust, Jason Sherlock, both Alumni, took to the court in style!

The DCU Students were down 17 points at half-time, but that did not let that deter them from going all out for the third and fourth quarter. They made an impressive comeback to pass out the Team Alumni score during the final quarter.

With 12 seconds left on the clock and Team Alumni down one basket, it was all guns blazing for those final moments. Just as the buzzer was about to call time, it was Andrew McGeever who got the winning shot for the team, with Team Alumni winning by just one point.

Chairperson of the DCU Men’s Basketball team, Gavin Doyle said was particularly impressed with the event.

“(The event) has been in the works for several years and for me to be able to make it finally happened and was huge for myself and DCU Basketball club. I think the event was great fun and hopefully it becomes a tradition and an annual event.”
