Staff Development: On-Request Workshops | Learning Innovation Unit
Workshops on Request
The Teaching Enhancement Team provides scheduled workshops on a wide range of teaching and learning topics for DCU, Linked Colleges and 3U Staff throughout the academic calendar. Workshops are delivered both in face-to-face and online formats to provide staff with as much flexibility to attend as possible. A full list of workshops is available on a monthly basis is regularly updated and communicated to all staff.
During November 2014 the following workshops are being facilitated by the TEU on request.
What the flip is a flipped classroom, and why should I care?
This facilitated lunchtime discussion will look at the relatively recent term, "the flipped classroom". We will consider whether it really is new or has been around since Socrates, whether it's an "all or nothing" scenario and whether/how we can utilise flipping. Research on the use of flipping in a range of disciplines will also be presented. Content: research on student response/achievement rates; video of lectures as a preparatory technique; use of YouTube resources prior to coming to class; out-of-class assignments with in-class subsequent deconstruction/marking.
Research on teaching and the gaining of publications from this
In this session, Dr Pip Ferguson will present and lead discussion about the above questions. She draws on a long background of staff development in tertiary institutions in New Zealand, and an international connection with the action research movement. Pip will bring examples of researchers in your area who are gaining publications from investigating their own disciplinary and practice areas. She's also available to mentor and support you if you decide you want to investigate this type of research.
Both of the above sessions are being facilitated by Dr Pip Ferguson. While on this occasion they are being held for a particular group, Pip is happy to negotiate similar sessions for other cohorts.
