Staff Development: Scheduled Workshops | Learning Innovation Unit
Workshops for August 2013
Moodle 2 : Weekly Workshops
The move to Moodle 2 offers a huge opportunity for lecturers to improve both the student and lecturer experience. Lecturers can if they wish ignore all the new changes and use moodle in the same manner as they have in the past.
However one of the consequences of this move to the new Moodle requires each lecturer transfer their courses themselves. This process takes on average 5 minutes per course. This workshop will show lecturers how to transfer their course to the new Moodle instance
By the end of this session participants will be able to:
- learn how to back up their Moodle files
- set up their new course
- locate a series of Moodle 2 resources
The LIU will facilitate weekly workshops each Monday throughout August and September. Staff should register at the following:

August 19th 2013: "Designing Challenging and Engaging Problems for PBL Initiatives"
Guest facilitator: Dr Terry Barrett, University College Dublin
Workshop Overview:
Designing engaging high quality problems is a key success factor for problem-based learning initiatives as the problem is the starting point and driving force for learning. This workshop focuses on inspiring ways of thinking about and doing problem design. Sample problems in different media are presented. Participants will design problems in small groups that will be then discussed with the larger group.
Workshop Facilitator:
Dr. Terry Barrett is a Lecturer in Educational Development at UCD Teaching and Learning. She has eighteen years experience of working with problem-based learning (PBL) as an education developer, programme coordinator, researcher and tutor. She has worked in the design and implementation of PBL initiatives in a range of disciplines including nursing, physiotherapy, computer science, ultrasound, science, English literature, liberal arts, business, community development, education, hospitality, tourism and policing. She has worked as a problem-based learning consultant in Ireland and abroad. Her doctorate thesis focused on what we can learn about problem-based learning from how students talked about PBL in tutorials. She has recently co-edited (with Sarah Moore) New Approaches to Problem-based Learning: Revitalising Your Practice in Higher Education. New York: Routledge. Her other research and teaching interests include creativity in higher education, peer observation of teaching, collaborative academic writing and empathy and education. She was joint co-ordinator of the Enquiry and Problem-based learning Project and is currently the Programme Director for the accredited programmes in University Teaching and Learning. She facilitates a scholarship of teaching writing group.
Workshop Participants:
This workshop is suitable for any lecturer who is interested in learning more about problem based learning and how to design problems for PBL. No previous experience of PBL is necessary, however this workshop is more suited for those who have a serious interest in implementing PBL in their teaching. Open to staff at DCU, Linked Colleges, and 3U partners RCSI and NUIM.
***Participants are welcome to a sandwich lunch from 1.30p.m.
