DCU Singapore Chapter celebrate St. Patrick's Day 2021 with in-person gathering

BY Derrick Moloney

On Monday, 22nd March 2021 the DCU Alumni Singapore Chapter was in the fortunate position to hold its first in-person event - a special 30th anniversary film screening of The Commitments.

Although we are still faced with many restrictions on social gatherings and networking events here in Singapore, DCU graduates based in Singapore were invited to attend this St. Patrick’s celebration.

The event was held at an international school in the northern part of the city-state called GEMS/XCL World Academy (Singapore) in the school’s state-of-the-art auditorium.

In Singapore, all cinemas are open and film screenings with up to 50 attendees are permitted on condition that the audience members are socially distanced and wearing their masks at all times throughout the film.

We opened the event with a beautiful live Irish music performance by DCU graduate, Aoife Mulligan.

Our VIP guest for the evening was Ireland's Ambassador to Singapore, Mr. Pat Bourne, who addressed the audience and revealed that he had previously attended both the 20th and the 25th anniversary screenings of The Commitments.

Ambassador Bourne also reminded the local DCU Alumni community that the invitation still stands to host a future in-person event at his residence in Singapore when it is safe to do so again.

DCU President, Prof Daire Keogh

DCU President, Prof. Daire Keogh also joined us virtually from Dublin and provided an update on how DCU has responded to the pandemic over the past year and spoke about opportunities open to the DCU alumni to volunteer as mentors to current students in the university.

In my own address as the DCU Alumni Singapore Chapter Ambassador, I spoke about some of our Chapter’s aspirations and future plans to host more in-person, social and cultural networking events as pandemic restrictions are further eased in Singapore.

We look forward to growing our new Chapter here in Singapore. For those based in Singapore or planning to relocate here, stay tuned for further details about our next in-person event, and join the DCU Singapore Chapter LinkedIn group here...
