Open Access Publishing Agreement with Elsevier

As of February 2020 a new three-year transformative deal comes into place between a consortium representing the Irish universities and institutes of technology, and Elsevier allowing affiliated authors to publish Open Access (Gold) in most of their journal titles.

Article Processing Charges (APCs) for these articles will be paid for under the terms of this agreement and eligible authors will not be charged.

Not all Elsevier titles are covered under this open access publishing agreement, but a list of all eligible titles is available here.

In practice, the process should work like this:

  • Upon acceptance (for articles submitted in 2020), the corresponding author will be prompted, via a wizard, to choose Gold Open Access and an appropriate licence.
  • The library at the corresponding author's home institution will then approve this request, providing the author is genuinely affiliated to the institution, and the article will be published open access. Under some circumstances (again due to affiliation) the request may be refused, but the author retains their right to change their mind, and publish free of charge under the traditional (subscription) model.

The number of APCs available to each institution is limited, and when DCU's allocation is used up authors will no longer be prompted by the wizard to choose the gold OA option.

This three-year transformative deal is a pilot and will be reviewed annually, so your feedback on how the process worked and the deal itself are welcomed.
